She leaned her back against the cold counter and titled her head and just stared at him. She was speechless. Why was he playing dumb with her? "Yes the way you've been acting." she promptly responded, "I mean, you and I have seem so distant. I've been trying to hint my feelings for you and you just seem more focused on our daughter. I feel like the only reason you and I still see eachother is because of Marie. I don't want to sound selfish, but it would be nice if you and I saw eachother because we wanted to see eachother." she finished. She bit her lip and turned back around, back facing Anthony. She just couldn't allow herself to face him at this moment.
A suprised smile crossed her face when he responded 'for us.' The two words were better than the special three words a man and woman can exchange between one another. Those two words clearly let her know that he did care, and he was willing to bring the sparks back. This was just something she had fantasized(sp?) about in a dream, but now her dream was the reality, "I love you." she replied, a wide smile on her face. That was the only thing that she thought would be appropriate to respond with, "I always have Anthony, and we both know I always will." she finished, turning back to face him and Marie.
"Rose, I have a lot of my mind.." he replied, when she spoke about their "distance." Tilting his head to the side, he bit at his lowerlip for a moment. "It's hard to know you're going off to war, darling." That last word came out without conscious, and he winced, hoping she wouldn't say anything about it.
He hated when his soft-side came out.
Glancing towards the woman as she admitted her love for him, Anthony looked almost unsure of what to say back for a moment. It seemed fast to him, but he had initiated this all. "..I love you, too?" He didn't sound sure, but he tried to hide that.. doing a poor job of so.
She squinted his eyes, beginning to think that Anthony was just saying these things, not meaning them. Darling? Did that just slip out? Lucky for him Rose decided not to comment on the term, focusing rather on the war terms. With a confident smile for show she released her lips and looked straight at him, "I know how scary wars are, but I'm confident you'll be one of the heroes who makes it back to his family, darling." she responded, not being able to resist adding the parody of the word 'darling'. She chuckled softly, unsure whether or not he heard the laugh.
For a moment she was relieved that he had declared his love to her in return, but she was unsure if he meant it. It sounded a bit, faux, "Nobody's forcing you to say that Anthony and a man should never say those words to a woman unless he truely means it." she told him. Then she became bold, the words "Did you mean it?" slipped out of her mouth.
When she called him "darling" in return, he narrowed his own eyes somewhat. Was it sarcasm? However, Anthony just gave a faint smile to Rose, bringing his shoulders up in a shrug. "I hope so," he stated.
Upon the near-correction, the fellow's eyes narrowed even more. "I know that," he muttered before looking away, letting his focus fall on Marie who had sleepily lowered her head against her daddy's shoulder. Did he meant it? No. Did he act like he did? Yes. "I meant it," came the small lie, not wanting to upset her.
Rose was not easily fooled, she was a sharp as a tack, "You'll come back from war and when you do we'll both be waiting for you." she replied, debating whether or not he was all talk and no action.
A sigh escaped her again, "Nobody's forcing you to say yes. Either you mean it or you don't. There's no guessing so, and there's no half way mark Anthony." her voice getting louder, "Did you honestly mean it or not? I can't wait for someone going off to war if they're not worth waiting for. I refuse to wait for someone who knows they have no future with me! That's not fair to you, Marie, and it's not fair to me either." she argued.
